San Ramón Catholic Church in Woodrow, Texas was Founded in 1974.
The Woodrow community is relatively small in numbers, but is an energetic and vibrant community located South of Lubbock on the Tahoka highway. From the early days of its founding, Catholics who lived in and about the town generally attended Saint Josephs Church or Christ the King Parish in Lubbock. Then, in 1968, Father Larry Nicholls of Christ the King began to visit the area. He and Father Tom McGovern began to organize the Catholic community, offering Mass and religious instruction in the homes.
The priests found a group of eager and talented workers who would form the basis for a parish community in Woodrow. Through the generosity of the late Ramon Mendez, the church acquired a piece of land and Father James O'Connor saw to the organization of resources needed to start building and edifice to serve as a combination church and parish hall. When the building was completed in 1974, it was dedicated, in honor of Ramon Mendez, as San Ramon. Father Ron Krisman of Christ the King began presiding at regular Masses, first once a month, the once a week on Sundays. San Ramon was a mission of Christ the King in the early days, and Sister Vianney Martinez OSF, conducted the school of religion.
By the time the Diocese of Lubbock was formed in 1983, San Ramon was being cared for by Father John Casey SAC, from Lubbock of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. the arrangement remained thus until 1988 when Father Glen Rosendale became the first pastor of San Ramon Woodrow. With great energy, the pastor and the San Ramon Catholic faithful worked together to complete a new church building, which was dedicated on October 30, 1988. The Catholic Extension Society provided a large sum of money toward the construction.
Father Rosendale was succeeded as pastor by Monsignor Joe James in 1990, but returned again in 1991 and stayed until taking up missionary work in Mexico. Expansion continued when another Extension grant assisted the parish in building a large hall and CCD center, dedicated early in 1993 under the pastorate of Father George Roney. The pastor's quarters had been attached to the old hall, and because of overcrowding, CCD children met in every available room, including his quarters. Once the new center was built, Father Roney and other priests had a place to call their own.
